Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. And one of the most preventable if caught early enough.

We talk a lot about skincare. About serums, SPF, morning and evening routines. But there’s one step we almost completely ignore and it can make the difference between an early diagnosis and a late one.

It’s called dermoscopic mapping. And less than an hour a year may be enough.

What is dermoscopic mapping?

It’s a non-invasive procedure in which a dermatologist scans and photographs every mole on the body using a dermatoscope a high-precision optical device. The images are saved and compared periodically, allowing the doctor to identify any change in shape, colour or size before it becomes dangerous.

Essentially, you create a complete map of your skin. And at every follow-up appointment, the doctor compares it with what was there before.

Why it matters especially now.

Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer. The statistics are clear: detected at an early stage, the survival rate exceeds 95%. Detected late, the prognosis changes dramatically.

The problem is that melanoma doesn’t hurt. You can’t feel it. It can look like a normal mole for years and change so slowly that you don’t notice the difference with the naked eye. The dermatoscope sees what the human eye cannot.

Who should get it done?

Everyone. But especially people with fair skin, many moles, a family history of melanoma or frequent sun exposure. Dermatologists recommend an annual dermoscopic map more frequently if risk factors are present.

It’s not a complicated procedure. It doesn’t hurt. It takes between 30 and 60 minutes. And it may be the most important thing you do for your health this year.
