Glow starts with the smile: at-home teeth whitening enters the smart era

At-home teeth whitening is going through a technological upgrade. PAP formulas, LED light, and smart devices promise a simpler and better-controlled experience. But what can they actually do?

Today, glow includes the teeth as well. In the beauty universe, attention is shifting towards the smile, and dental whitening is borrowing familiar technologies from skincare: LED light, customizable treatments, and formulas without hydrogen peroxide.

A brighter smile can subtly change the expression of the face, but very white teeth are not automatically healthier. The natural shade differs from person to person, and the realistic objective is the reduction of stains and achieving a uniform appearance.

Why do teeth change color?

Coffee, black tea, red wine, and tobacco favor surface stains. Other color changes can come from inside the tooth and can be influenced by dentine, age, certain medications, or trauma. These respond differently to whitening and may require an in-office approach.

Before a treatment, it is advisable to check the health of the teeth and gums. Cavities, cracks, inflammation, or existing sensitivity can cause discomfort. Crowns, veneers, implants, and fillings also do not change color like natural teeth.

PAP or peroxide?

Classic treatments frequently use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Their efficacy is well-documented, but temporary dental sensitivity and gingival irritation can occur.

PAP, phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid, acts on the molecules that give color to stains without using hydrogen peroxide. The research is encouraging, but results depend on the formula, concentration, pH, and application time. The presence of PAP does not guarantee the same efficacy for all products.

What can LED light do?

In dental whitening systems, LED light acts together with a compatible gel and can support the reaction through which pigments are broken down. The efficacy of the entire system is influenced by the wavelength, the gel formula, and the usage protocol.

Red light complements the experience through a function dedicated to gum care. For sensitivity, inflammation, or other gingival issues, evaluation by a dentist remains essential.

What does smart teeth whitening look like?

The FOREO ISSA™ Teeth Whitening Set combines the gel with 18% PAP, dual LED light, and sonic pulsations. The device uses 16 blue LEDs at the declared wavelength of 460 nm, and 16 red LEDs at 620 nm.

Sonic Pulse technology distributes the gel across the tooth surface, and the silicone tray has a universal format. Usage modes and treatment duration can be adjusted through the FOREO For You app. The recommended protocol involves one 15-minute session per day for six days. According to FOREO, results can reach up to ten shades lighter, but these vary depending on the initial color, type of stains, and adherence to instructions.

The set contains the gel needed for a complete course, and the FOREO issa™ Advanced Teeth Whitening Gel can be purchased separately for maintenance.

How do you avoid frequent mistakes?

More gel and extended sessions do not guarantee better results. Excess product can reach the gums and cause discomfort. Overlapping the gel with whitening strips and highly abrasive pastes is also not recommended.

Lemon, aggressively applied baking soda, and abrasive powders can damage the tooth surface. For reducing stains, rinsing the mouth with water after coffee, tea, or red wine is a simple and useful gesture.

At-home teeth whitening can be a convenient option when chosen with informed judgment and used correctly. Technology simplifies the experience, but the glow of a smile starts with healthy teeth and gums.
