Who are Gran Error, really?

Behind the project are the people who made history as Play & Win and built the hits that took INNA to the top of the world

There are few producers about whom it can be said, without exaggeration, that they changed the direction of an entire musical genre. Marcel Botezan and Sebastian Barac are among them, and under the name Gran Error, they demonstrate that their story is far from over.

From “Hot” and “Sun Is Up”, the tracks that opened the world for INNA, to “Levitate”, the current No. 1 on radio in collaboration with Antonia, the signature of the two has been heard for almost two decades in the most played tracks in Romania. Regardless of the name under which they work, the conclusion remains the same: the two know how to make hits.

From Play & Win to Gran Error: the same team, a new chapter

Under the name Play & Win, Marcel Botezan and Sebastian Barac built, alongside their colleagues, a sound that became synonymous with the international explosion of Romanian dance music. They did not follow a trend they created it, and generations of producers have learned from it.

Their portfolio includes hits such as “Hot”, “Sun Is Up”, “Amazing”, “Caliente”, “Ruleta”, “Yalla”, and “Up”, the INNA collaboration with Sean Paul. “Sun Is Up”, for example, was written and produced by the Play & Win members and became one of the artist’s most important international hits.

Throughout their career, the two have worked not only with Romanian artists, but also with international names such as Akon, Flo Rida, Nick Jonas, and Nicki Minaj, accumulating over 30 awards and distinctions a track record that few producers in the region can put on the table.

Gran Error, today: Two tracks at No. 1 on radio, with ANTONIA: “Levitate” and “Clap Clap”

Launched in May, “Levitate” is currently one of the strongest tracks on radio and is part of the new wave of Gran Error productions: a dance-pop cocktail built exactly for the festival and club season.

However, it is not the first No. 1 obtained by Gran Error together with Antonia. In 2022, “Clap Clap” the collaboration of the two producers with Antonia and Albanian artist Elvana Gjata also reached the top position in Romanian radio charts, with a strong performance in the region as well and millions of streams on streaming platforms.

Two tracks at No. 1, three years apart, with the same artist and the same production team behind them. It is the kind of repetition that says more than any isolated hit: we are not talking about a formula that worked once, but about a mechanism that works.

Top collaborations continue: Gran Error x SICKOTOY

Gran Error is not slowing down. On August 21, the project is preparing a new release, this time alongside SICKOTOY, one of the important names of the new wave of Romanian producers who have taken the local sound to international audiences.

The new collaboration comes at a time when Gran Error already has two tracks solidly positioned in the attention of the radio audience: “Levitate”, alongside Antonia, and “Atâtea Inimi”, the track launched by Florian Rus and Holy Molly, present in radio charts.

Catalog figures: 18 titles with over 100 million streams and tracks in charts from over 29 countries

Beyond the radio charts in Romania, the catalog of the two is measured in a much rarer currency a density difficult to find in a single portfolio. From the iconic INNA tracks, to fan favorites such as “Yalla”, “Flashbacks”, “Deja Vu”, “Caliente”, “Bad Boys”, “Ruleta”, “Love”, “In Your Eyes”, to the celebrated Akcent hit Kylie.

The streaming figures, however, tell only half the story. The other half is read on maps: tracks signed by the two have entered the radio and sales charts in over 29 different countries. Tracks such as Hot, Up, Sun is Up, Amazing, Deja Vu, and Kylie have reached the top of charts in the US, UK, Mexico, Canada, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Poland, Russia, Denmark, Turkey, Greece, Czech Republic, Croatia, Switzerland, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Romania, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Belarus.

Over 19 billion reasons and a story that matters more than the figures

The catalog signed by the two has surpassed 19 billion streams and views. Impressive, but the figures are only part of the story.

More important is what lies behind them: a production experience built on hits that have stood the test of time. From Play & Win and the INNA era, to Gran Error and the new generation of artists, Marcel Botezan and Sebastian Barac have achieved something that very few producers in the world manage they have made the transition between two musical generations without losing their identity and without ever dropping out of the top.

If Play & Win was the name that wrote the beginning of this story, Gran Error is the chapter that shows that Marcel Botezan and Sebastian Barac still have a great deal left to say.
