After a summer spent traveling across the country as part of a national caravan with over 35 screenings, “Hoinari prin Munți,” the documentary directed by Cosmin Dumitrache, opens in cinemas nationwide on Friday, September 11.
Bucharest, Timișoara, Brașov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Arad, Craiova, Galați, Pitești, Suceava, Iași, Ploiești, Târgu Mureș, Sinaia, Baia Mare and Bistrița are just a few of the cities where the film can be seen, starting Friday.
The documentary has been met with enthusiasm that exceeded the team’s expectations, with full theaters, moving encounters and extraordinary feedback from audiences. From one city to another, viewers discovered the story of Dinu and Marlene Mititeanu, the mountaineers from Cluj who made the mountain not just a passion, but a true way of life.
“Two months have passed since the film’s premiere, followed by more than 35 screenings in what someone called our ‘Via Cinematografica,’ our national caravan. Almost everywhere we had full theaters and we witnessed an atmosphere of enthusiasm, with long applause. We suspected the film would be well received, but the audience’s reactions and joy exceeded our expectations. We invite you to see the film starting September 11 in cinemas across the country, and we hope our story will be a source of inspiration for all of you, to get out into nature and the mountains more often and to discover them with open hearts and souls,” said Dinu and Marlene Mititeanu.
A documentary about love, freedom and the joy of living life fully, at any age
At 87 years old, Dinu Mititeanu continues to live the mountain with the same energy and passion. Together with Marlene, he has spent New Year’s Eve and Christmas in a tent for over 25 years, including when temperatures drop to -20 degrees, has hiked the entire Via Transilvanica from north to south, also by tent, and is currently enjoying the route in reverse as well. One of Dinu Mititeanu’s greatest achievements remains climbing 33 peaks over 4,000 meters in the Alps, between the ages of 70 and 80. These were not simple hikes, but technical ascents of iconic peaks such as Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Dom, all alongside his wife, Marlene. The two are an example for the mountaineering community: a couple who, after decades spent together, have kept intact the joy of discovering the mountain and experiencing it side by side.
Viewers will discover in the film sequences from their mountain tours in the Carpathians, the Alps and Patagonia, as well as footage of climbing, via ferrata and alpine ascents, filmed over the six years during which the documentary was made. These are joined by images from their personal archive, from their early expeditions, as well as fragments of each of their stories with the mountain, from before they met. The documentary thus outlines not only the love story of Dinu and Marlene, but also the perspective of their loved ones family and close friends on their profound connection with the mountain.
“It was an intense period for me, as director and producer of this film, but also for the entire team. After the premieres at TIFF and in Bucharest, we drew enough energy for a year from the national caravan, which was absolutely wonderful, without exaggeration. Now we’re taking the next step, the cinema release, and what I hope is that the film won’t end with the credits, but will continue in every person who leaves the theater wanting to look at the mountain differently and, perhaps, their own life with joy, with a desire to wander the trails, but also with great respect for nature.
