Arsmonitor opens the 2026 – 2027 exhibition programme with ICONOFLUX, a curatorial research signed by Lina Țărmure. The exhibition will be open to visitors between September 3 and October 22, 2026.
ICONOFLUX brings together works by Horia Bernea, Florin Mitroi, Ion Dumitriu, Mihai Sârbulescu, Alexandru Chira, Bogdan Vlăduță, Gili Mocanu, Anca Mureșan, Ciprian Mureșan, Șerban Savu, Diana Popuț, and Eva Chapkin.
Presented for the first time this summer at the Cluj-Napoca Art Museum, as part of Praxis! Emergent Curator’s Days, the exhibition is reconfigured for the Arsmonitor space in Bucharest. The selection of works has been rethought in relation to the architecture and dimensions of the gallery, while the list of artists has remained unchanged.
ICONOFLUX begins from a series of inquiries related to the way representations of a sacred nature circulate in Romanian contemporary art from the 1970s to the present. The present exhibition is the first in a broader series, which will unfold over the course of several years. It does not aim to offer definitive answers or conclusions, but to make visible a wide spectrum of possible correspondences between generations and different, sometimes divergent, historical contexts.
Looking from the present towards the past, the selection of artists highlights a series of multifaceted typologies of the sacred–profane antinomy. In this retrospective research, the theme follows the way in which what appears sacred transgresses the limits of art history and local historical circumstances, while what appears profane often retains references to the sacred iconic.
What was once an explicit symbol of the sacred can today be emptied of its original meaning, while other symbolic forms make indirect references to spirituality through technique, quotation, reference, or appropriation. ICONOFLUX follows precisely this flux of the iconic between sacred and profane, revealing the persistence of forms and formulas that transcend historical and generational circumstances.
Lina Țărmure works as a cultural manager and curator. She completed her undergraduate studies (2021) and master’s degree (2023) at the Faculty of Art History and Theory, National University of Arts in Bucharest. In 2019 she co-founded Diptych Art Space, and she is currently the director of the Arsmonitor gallery in Bucharest.
Arsmonitor is the first art gallery opened in Casa Presei Libere, in 2023, being an exclusively private initiative, supported by Mia Munteanu, entrepreneur, and Silviu Pădurariu, curator.
