Skincare: What the Internet Doesn’t Tell Us

The internet is filled with 10-step routines, miracle ingredients, and trends that shift week after week. Influencers recommend products, algorithms amplify what’s viral, and we end up buying more and understanding less. But what happens when that viral advice contradicts your skin’s reality?

Skin doesn’t just react to products, it reacts to context

One of the most widespread myths promoted online is that the solution to any skin concern can be found in a product. In reality, skin responds to your entire lifestyle. Age, diet, hydration levels, sleep quality, stress, and even hormonal changes influence your complexion just as much, sometimes even more, than any serum or cream in your daily routine. Dehydrated skin doesn’t necessarily need a new product. It may simply need more water, better sleep, or a more balanced diet.

Ingredient compatibility, a topic rarely addressed

Another aspect the internet dangerously oversimplifies is the combining of active ingredients. Retinol, vitamin C, exfoliating acids, niacinamide all effective on their own, but not every combination works. Layering the wrong ingredients can irritate the skin, compromise the efficacy of the actives, or worsen existing concerns. Dr. Amalia Anghel points out that many of the adverse reactions patients attribute to a specific product are, in fact, the result of an incorrect combination or an overloaded routine.

More doesn’t mean better

The tendency to accumulate products, known in the beauty community as “shelfie culture,” is one of the main causes of skin imbalances. A skin barrier overloaded with too many actives becomes more sensitive, more reactive, and harder to rebalance. Sometimes, the best routine is also the simplest one.

What we should do differently

Effective skincare starts with knowledge, not trends. Before following a viral routine, ask yourself whether it suits your skin type, your age, and your actual needs. Consult a specialist when persistent concerns arise, rather than searching for solutions on TikTok or Instagram. A simple routine, built with compatible ingredients and adapted to your lifestyle, will always deliver better and longer-lasting results than the most popular routine on the internet.
