Sarah Burton Named Givenchy’s New Creative Director

Sarah Burton has been named creative director of Givenchy, the LVMH-owned fashion house announced Monday. Burton becomes the brand’s fourth designer in 10 years, with her debut show set for March 2025.

After leaving Alexander McQueen last year, where she spent over 25 years at the London-based label, Burton is known for blending poetry and utility in her precisely tailored collections.

Burton was Lee McQueen’s right hand for many years and became creative director of Kering-owned Alexander McQueen following McQueen’s death in 2010. She brought a softer, more luxurious touch to the confrontational, high-drama brand. Her collections often featured easy-to-wear pieces like blazers and combat boots, paired with chunky, punk-inflected jewelry and accessories, as well as extravagant runway silhouettes, such as a high-collared gown draped with giant taffeta roses.

At Givenchy, Burton finds herself once again following in the footsteps of her late mentor, Lee McQueen, who served as creative director of the house from 1996 to 2001. McQueen’s tenure at Givenchy was marked by dramatic, eclectic collections that defied conventional good taste and shook up the fashion world.
