Bucharest, May 2025. Those who believe that vacation planning always follows a strict logic may need to rethink that idea. A survey* conducted by Kiwi.com, a travel-tech leader, reveals the surprising travel habits of Romanians – amusing, sometimes even absurd, but always authentic.
From flight tickets purchased in the most unexpected places and moments, to suitcases full of unusual items, Romanians prove that every journey is unique and that spontaneity is often just as important as the destination itself.
Suitcases Full of… Personality
When asked about the most unusual thing they have packed, 37.3% of Romanians admitted to preparing outfits for all possible weather scenarios, even though in reality they wore the same outfit every day.
28.1% of respondents confessed that they never travel without a generous stock of snacks “just in case”, proving that hunger is their biggest enemy on the road.

Other unexpected choices?
● A full arsenal of medicines, “just in case” (20.2%)
● Too many cosmetics and hygiene products (17.2%)
● Excessive numbers of shoes, while wearing only one pair during the whole trip (15.1%)
● Sports equipment that never leaves the suitcase (10.8%)
● A pile of unread books that only add weight to the luggage (10.5%)
● Even candles or scented diffusers to make the hotel “feel like home” (2.5%)
Flights Booked at Unconventional Moments
When it comes to bookings, Romanians choose the moment that feels right, without necessarily having a detailed itinerary.
37.9% said they booked a flight while on the toilet, and 27.2% after a difficult day, in search of a quick escape.
19.5% made spontaneous travel plans with friends over coffee, while 14.6% booked flights while still on another vacation. Others booked while at work (19.1%), waiting in line (10.4%), or even in the middle of a party (9.7%).

Romanians show that the desire to discover new places doesn’t follow a set schedule – it comes spontaneously, at the most unexpected times: at the office, out on the town, in line, or at parties.
Kiwi.com is there to support them, making travel planning easy, fast, and flexible – no matter when the urge to explore the world strikes.
