Why Emporio Armani Brought in Dario Vitale

After months of speculation, denials and one of fashion’s most closely watched “will he, won’t he” sagas, Dario Vitale has landed at Emporio Armani. The move caps a turbulent year for the 42-year-old Italian designer, who spent a single, widely praised season as creative director of Versace before being let go in December 2025 following Prada Group’s acquisition of the brand.

The rumors first surfaced in June, when Italian journalists reported Vitale was in talks with Armani. Andrea Dell’Orco, one of the key figures steering the house after Giorgio Armani’s death last year, publicly denied the reports at the time, telling the Italian press agency ANSA they “are not true.” Industry watchers were quick to question the timing anyway: with the Armani Group still searching for a buyer for the 15% stake that the late designer’s will instructed his heirs to sell, was this really the moment to bring in a new creative director for one of the group’s key labels?

As it turns out, the appointment may make more sense than the skeptics assumed. Rather than signaling an imminent sale, installing Vitale is widely read as a move to strengthen Emporio Armani’s business and creative relevance before any outside investor comes in the same logic that made Vitale’s earlier work behind the scenes at Miu Miu so closely watched, as he helped shape that label’s transformation into one of fashion’s hottest growth stories.

Emporio Armani, launched in 1981 as a younger, more experimental line sitting beneath the main Giorgio Armani label, has long been seen as an underused asset within the group a “light under a bushel,” as some commentators have put it. With Vitale’s arrival, many in the industry expect the label to finally get a clearer identity of its own, distinct from both the formal elegance of the mainline and the more accessible Armani Exchange.

For Vitale, it’s a return to relevance after a chaotic year: exiting Miu Miu in January 2025, a single celebrated collection at Versace last September, and then an abrupt departure just months later. Emporio Armani now gives him the kind of high-profile platform his admirers have been waiting for.
