Starting November 1, 2024, OPI unleashes the magic of the Holidays with a new limited-edition collection inspired by the cinematic event, Wicked. The film, a Universal Pictures creation, is set to be released in theaters starting November 27 and promises to be a spectacular premiere defining a generation.
OPI x Wicked introduces 12 matching shades available in the Nail Lacquer formula, the newly improved GelColor with OPI Intelli-Gel Technology™, and 9 long-lasting Infinite Shine shades. The colors and design are inspired by the vibrant, rich, magical, captivating world of Wicked. Magical effects include a glow-in-the-dark shade, shimmers, pearl shines, and matte shades that will thrill nail styling enthusiasts.
Based on one of the most beloved and long-running musicals in Broadway history, Wicked tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. One of the main roles is played by Cynthia Erivo (multiple Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner for her roles in Harriet and the Broadway version of The Color Purple); she plays Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman with green skin who discovers her true power. The other lead role is taken by Ariana Grande, a multi-platinum superstar and Grammy Award winner, playing Glinda, a popular, privileged young woman who finds her true heart.
The film, directed by Jon M. Chu, also stars Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton as Fiyero, as well as Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz. The movie’s makeup, hair, and prosthetics designer, Oscar winner Frances Hannon, used OPI products to create the stunning nails featured in the film, which are an integral part of the character imagery for Glinda, Elphaba, Madame Morrible, and more. The nail looks evolve as the characters grow throughout the film.
“The lavish sets and costumes, the character arcs, and the shades of green found in nature inspired unique and fantastic nail looks,” explained Frances Hannon, the film’s makeup, hair, and prosthetics designer. “I wanted the nails to help tell the characters’ stories, as seen with Elphaba’s (Cynthia Erivo) nails, which are naturally green as extensions of her skin. Her manicure progresses into longer nails with more pronounced nail art as she develops a stronger sense of self and discovers her true potential. Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) French manicure is stylish, elegant, and timeless, with emerald decorations to reflect her privilege and popularity.
I have long been a fan of OPI for its exceptional quality and range of colors. I enjoyed layering different greens and experimenting with press-on nails during filming. I can’t wait to see these looks come to life for everyone to enjoy,” continued Hannon.
The color palette starts with Glinda’s perfect pinks and reaches Elphaba’s magical greens, all inspired by the opulent and vibrant world of Wicked. The collection features a mix of candy shades (Glinda the Good!, Head Shiztress, Yellow Brick Road, I’m the Wonderfullest), electric blues with sparkles (Fiyero’s My Mani, OPI’m Phosphorescent!), and mystical dark shades for those moments of intrigue (Deflying Gravity, Thrillifying!, Ozmopolitan). All 12 shades are available in the new GelColor formula with OPI Intelli-Gel Technology™, delivering flawless results with a self-leveling formula that maintains a professional look for up to three weeks. The shade names are as electrifying as the colors themselves, inspired by the film and its characters.
“OPI x Wicked was an organic collaboration. We started working with the makeup artist, set designer, and costume designer and became more and more excited,” explained Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI co-founder and Brand Ambassador. “There was so much inspiration on set, which we translated into various effects and colors, all inspired by the magical world of Wicked. Once the shades were created, we worked with Universal Pictures to name them based on the film’s themes and characters.”
“I walked onto the set and saw OPI everywhere. I could see how the nails were an important part of defining the characters’ images, and I knew that OPI and Wicked could create magic together,” added Jill Bartoshevich, OPI’s Global Director of Color Equity. “We took the five themes from the film: finding power, equality, integrity, sisterhood, and the strength to face adversity, and interpreted them through the collection’s colors. OPI’m Phosphorescent! is a glow-in-the-dark shade in our high-durability Infinite Shine formula. This iridescent green plays a significant role in the film. Another standout color is Ga-Linda, a pale pink that embodies Glinda’s character.”
