This extensive showcase, running from August 7 to November 11, 2024, celebrates over six decades of Tanaami’s influential work, presenting a deep dive into his contributions to contemporary art.

“Adventures in Memory” examines the prolific career of Tanaami, highlighting his artistic evolution from the late 1960s through today. Attendees will experience a vast array of media including new paintings, intricate sculptures, and innovative animations. The exhibition also revisits his groundbreaking graphic designs from his early career, vibrant wooden sculptures from the 1980s, and recently unearthed pop art pieces from his studio.

Starting his artistic journey at Musashino Art University, Tanaami rose to prominence in the 1970s, notably becoming the inaugural art director for Playboy Japan. His distinctive style, which flourished in Japan’s underground art circles, has cemented his status as a pivotal force in the art community.
The retrospective is hosted at the National Art Center, located at 7-22-2 Roppongi, Minato-ku, in Tokyo. This event provides a unique opportunity to explore the thematic core of memory through Tanaami’s innovative lens, showcasing both his historic and latest works.
