BUCHAREST, March 21, 2025 – Kiwi.com, a leader in the travel-tech industry, has conducted a survey with the help of Stem/Mark to analyze the travel plans and preferences of Romanians for 2025. The results highlight their enthusiasm for vacations in Europe and beyond, as well as an increased interest in relaxation and cultural exploration.
Romanians Set to Explore More in 2025, Both in Europe and Beyond According to the data gathered, Romanians aim to travel more in 2025, both within Europe and internationally. Over 31% of respondents plan 2-3 vacations in Europe, slightly down from 33.4% last year. Additionally, 18% of Romanians aim to visit both European and non-European destinations, an increase from 14.6% in 2024.
Conversely, 27.5% of Romanians prefer a single trip within Europe, compared to 32.1% last year, and 7.6% choose to travel once outside of Europe, up from 6.8% in 2024. These figures confirm that while Europe remains the primary choice for Romanian tourists, interest in exploring other continents is on the rise.
What Motivates Romanians to Travel? Relaxation and Cultural Exploration Top the List When asked about the main reasons for their travels, most Romanians mentioned relaxation and discovering new cultures. 77.2% of respondents seek vacations for unwinding, stress reduction, and disconnection, a slight increase from 75.7% last year. At the same time, 53.6% are interested in exploring new places and local traditions, up from 49.8% in 2024, suggesting a growing interest in authentic cultural experiences.
While visiting family (10.3%) and business trips (8.3%) remain relevant factors in vacation planning, these are much less significant compared to the desire for relaxation and exploration. Notably, there is a significant decrease in interest for visiting friends and family (from 18.4% in 2024), while business travel has slightly increased (from 7.7% last year).
Essential Factors in Choosing Destinations: Safety, Costs, and Local Culture Costs remain a crucial criterion for Romanian tourists: 46.2% are mindful of flight prices, a considerable increase from 32.8% last year, and 50.7% look for the best value-for-money in accommodations, a stable percentage compared to 52.4% in 2024. The percentage is similar to that in Poland (52.7%), but slightly lower than in Hungary (63.9%).
Safety has become an increasingly important factor in travel planning: 42.6% of Romanians consider destination safety a primary criterion, a significant jump from 29.6% in 2024. Compared to other European countries, Romanians place a higher emphasis on safety: 42.6%, a higher percentage than in Spain (35%), the Czech Republic (34.6%), and significantly above Hungary (27.9%).
Additionally, local culture plays an essential role in destination choice: 33.5% of Romanians are interested in the history, gastronomy, and local events, up from 32.6% last year. This confirms that the desire to experience a destination’s culture is as important as practical aspects, such as costs and safety.
