The lack of representation within the fashion industry is a long-standing issue. The recent SS24 fashion shows brought to light, once again, the industry’s slow pace in embracing diversity, especially in terms of body inclusivity. Despite the increasing public demand for inclusivity and body positivity, less than 1% of the models gracing the runways this season were plus-size.
The fashion industry, with its global influence, holds a significant responsibility in shaping societal standards of beauty. Runway shows, being the most public and influential face of the industry, are looked upon as the benchmark of what’s trending not just in clothes, but in body standards as well. When only a fraction of these models represent the plus-size community, it sends a narrow message about beauty standards.
It’s worth noting that the industry has made some strides over the years. Brands like Savage X Fenty by Rihanna have been praised for their inclusive runway shows. Moreover, models like Ashley Graham and Tess Holliday have broken barriers, representing the plus-size community on global platforms.
However, the recent SS24 shows highlighted that these instances are still more the exception than the rule.
For the fashion industry to genuinely be inclusive, it needs a more significant paradigm shift. This isn’t just about token representation but about integrating body inclusivity into the fabric of the industry. Designers, casting directors, and agencies need to be proactive in ensuring diversity.
Brands must also understand that inclusivity is not just a trend but a reflection of reality. Majority of consumers do not fit into the narrow body standards historically showcased on the runways. Embracing body diversity can also be a smart business move, reaching out to a broader consumer base.
The SS24 fashion shows serve as a reminder of the journey ahead for the fashion industry. While there have been positive changes in recent years, there’s much work to be done. Authentic representation on the runway can lead to a more inclusive, accepting society, and the fashion world has the power and responsibility to lead that change.
