Prejuvenation. Or how botox at 25 became the new gym membership.

We’re no longer waiting for wrinkles to appear. We’re preventing them. At 25. With monthly appointments.

There’s a new ritual in urban Romania. Morning: vitamin C serum, SPF 50, microneedling at home. Evening: retinol, peptides, hydrating mask. Once a month: a clinic appointment for “low doses of botulinum toxin and preventive microfiller”.

Age of the patient: 24.

It’s not an isolated case. It’s a trend. It’s called prejuvenation from “pre” and “rejuvenation” and it means treating your wrinkles before they exist. Investing in your face at the age your parents invested in their first car.

How did we get here?

TikTok played an enormous role. Dermatologists and aesthetic doctors discovered that educational tutorials perform extraordinarily well on the algorithm and that an audience of 20-25 year olds is fascinated by the concept of “skin investment”. Prevention sounds smarter than correction. More responsible. More proactive.

And the industry responded. Clinics created “prejuvenation” packages specially designed for young people. Prices are accessible a few hundred lei a month. Enough to seem reasonable. Enough to become a habit.

But does it make medical sense?

Partially. Serious dermatologists confirm that preventive skincare daily SPF, hydration, retinol from age 25 has real, documented benefits. Preventive botulinum toxin at 24? It’s more nuanced. Some specialists recommend it for areas with intense muscular movement. Others say it’s premature and can affect the natural expressiveness of the face in the long term.

What’s certain is that the industry has no interest in telling you that maybe you can wait.

And yet why do they do it?

Because anxiety about ageing has dramatically dropped in age. If your grandmother thought about wrinkles at 50 and your mother at 35, the current generation starts at 22. Not because they age faster. But because they see more filters, before-and-afters, perfect faces on screen for 8 hours a day.

Prejuvenation is the response to anxiety, not to medicine. It’s what happens when you spend your adolescence comparing your face to generated or filtered images and reach the conclusion that your natural face at 25 requires intervention.

We’re not judging the choice. We’re judging the context.

If at 25 you want botox and feel good about the decision that’s your choice. Your body, your money, your face.

But if you’re doing it because you’re afraid of how you’ll look at 30 and that fear was planted by an algorithm, by an influencer paid by a clinic, or by an impossible standard then it’s worth asking: who is really winning from your anxiety?

Not you. Definitely not you.
