Melanoma Diagnosis at 20: How a Suspicious Mole Was Caught in Time

A young athlete, just 20 years old, received a diagnosis that changed her perspective on her own health: melanoma, discovered however at an early stage, thanks to a routine dermatoscopic check. The case was presented by Dr. Amalia Anghel, of Skin Med Clinic, in a video in which she explains the importance of regular dermatological checkups, especially for active people who are frequently exposed to the sun.

A seemingly ordinary mole, with warning signs under the dermatoscope

It all started with a mole the young woman had had for some time, which didn’t seem, at first glance, concerning. During a routine consultation, however, dermatoscopic examination revealed structural changes specific to an early-stage melanoma invisible to the naked eye, but clearly visible through dermatoscopy.

“Early diagnosis was possible precisely because of this check,” explains Dr. Amalia Anghel, highlighting the essential role of dermatoscopy in identifying suspicious skin lesions before they progress.

Why the early stage matters

When caught early, melanoma has a much better prognosis compared to advanced forms, where treatment becomes more complex and more invasive. This case confirms, once again, how important an annual dermatological checkup is regardless of age especially for people with an active lifestyle, constantly exposed to UV radiation.

A signal for every reader

The story of this young athlete is a simple but essential reminder: regularly checking your moles through a dermatoscopic consultation can make the difference between a treatable diagnosis and one with serious complications. A routine checkup, just a few minutes long, can literally save a life.
