Louis Vuitton Foundation to Showcase Matisse and Ellsworth Kelly in Spring Exhibitions

Matisse's The Red Studio Comes Alive

This spring, the Louis Vuitton Foundation is set to captivate art enthusiasts with two significant exhibitions: a dedicated showcase of Henri Matisse’s “The Red Studio” and a comprehensive retrospective of Ellsworth Kelly’s works spanning from 1949 to 2015. Scheduled from May 4 to September 9, 2024, these exhibitions not only highlight individual mastery but also mark a poignant tribute during the Paris Olympic Games, with LVMH showing its support through a unique artistic lens.

Matisse’s The Red Studio Comes Alive

In a collaboration with New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the SMK – Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, the Louis Vuitton Foundation delves into the intricate history of Matisse’s 1911 masterpiece, “The Red Studio.” This exhibition unites the artworks featured within the original painting for the first time since they left Matisse’s studio, offering a rare glimpse into the artist’s creative world. Visitors will have the opportunity to view Matisse’s own works that populate the painting, ranging from family portraits to lesser-known pieces, alongside a selection of archival materials unveiling the painting’s storied past.

Celebrating Ellsworth Kelly: Shapes and Colours

Marking 100 years since Kelly’s birth, the “Ellsworth Kelly: Shapes and Colours, 1949-2015” exhibition presents an exhaustive overview of the artist’s prolific career, showcasing over a hundred of his creations. This retrospective, the first of its kind in France, examines Kelly’s enduring influence on abstract art through his paintings, sculptures, drawings, and more, underlining his unique approach to form, color, and space. The display, set against the backdrop of the Louis Vuitton Foundation’s modern architectural setting, provides a harmonious dialogue between Kelly’s work and the venue’s design ethos.

A Confluence of Art and Sport

Coinciding with the Paris Olympic Games, the Louis Vuitton Foundation will also spotlight a curated selection of sports-related artworks from its collection, offering an artistic interpretation of the global sporting event. This initiative reflects the foundation’s commitment to intertwining cultural heritage with contemporary occurrences, fostering a rich dialogue between different forms of artistic expression.

These exhibitions at the Louis Vuitton Foundation promise to be a spring highlight for the art community, showcasing the convergence of historical significance and modern creativity while celebrating the enduring legacies of Matisse and Kelly.
