Bucharest, December 18. The year 2024 has been remarkable for travel and adventures. Kiwi.com, one of the leading travel-tech companies, has analyzed Romanian travel preferences and unveiled fascinating insights into their escapades this year.

Despite flight ticket prices rising by an average of 15% compared to 2023, Romanians maintained an average trip duration of approximately six days, demonstrating their unwavering enthusiasm for travel.

The most popular destinations were Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Romania, and France, with favorite cities including London, Milan, Bucharest, Rome, and Paris. Romanian travelers explored a total of 821 cities in 134 countries. The busiest routes were from Bucharest to London, Milan, Rome, Paris, and Barcelona.

The busiest months for ticket bookings were September, June, July, May, and August, reflecting both peak holiday season and transitional months with lower prices and fewer crowds.

Farther Horizons in 2024

Romanian tourists ventured to more distant locations in 2024, with countries like China (+107.14%), Tunisia (+52.31%), Indonesia (+32.39%), and the Maldives (+23.81%) capturing the attention of adventurers. In Europe, Moldova and Albania stood out as favorite destinations, with a 253.7% and 161.67% increase in bookings compared to the previous year.

Cities such as Chișinău, Tirana, Bilbao, New York, and Glasgow gained popularity among Romanians in 2024.

Searches on Kiwi.com revealed a spectacular growth in interest, with over 291 million searches—up 109.8% from 2023. In addition to classic destinations like Italy, Spain, Germany, and France, Romanians showed a growing curiosity for less-explored places like Azerbaijan (+94.51%), Qatar (+79.75%), the Cook Islands (+52.16%), and Nepal (+51.35%).

Surprise cities with the highest search increases included Fairbanks – Alaska (+754.2%), Salerno – Italy (+503.64%), Enfidha – Tunisia (+428.18%), and Tartu – Estonia (+300.7%). These numbers reflect a shift in Romanian tourists’ preferences, indicating a growing openness to unique experiences and unconventional destinations alongside traditional tourist spots.

Spontaneity and Flexibility in Travel

Romanians searched for “Anywhere” destinations nearly 14.3 million times and “Anytime” + “Anywhere” 13.2 million times, showcasing a heightened appetite for spontaneous and flexible travel. Careful planning, however, proved to lead to significant savings.

Most Romanians booked their flights on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM, but the cheapest tickets were purchased on Mondays between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Additionally, the first days of January and the beginning of the week were the best times to find lower-priced tickets.

The cheapest ticket purchased by a Romanian in 2024 was just €4, for a Cluj-Napoca–Milan flight in March, booked 43 days ahead of the scheduled April departure.

Record Travel Distances

The record for the longest journey by a Romanian was 43,435 km in one month on a route from New Zealand to Belgium. This adventure included stopovers in Auckland and Doha, a day in Belgrade, two days in London, nine days in Cluj-Napoca, and eleven days in Brussels, before returning to New Zealand with stops in Budapest, Shanghai, and Auckland.

Moreover, over 32% of Romanian tourists chose itineraries with layovers to reach their final destinations.

In total, Romanians traveled more than half a billion kilometers in 2024. Here’s to even more adventures in 2025!
