Area’s SS24 collection bridges decades of art and fashion.

As the collection evolved, it introduced denim pieces that played with form and exposure

In a whimsical fusion of fashion and art, Area’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection marks a decade of innovative design with an array of garments that quite literally ‘look back’ at its admirers. Held at the iconic Starrett-Lehigh Building in New York, this milestone collection by Piotrek Panszczyk drew inspiration from the exaggerated expressions of 1920s cartoons and the vibrant essence of ’60s pop art, culminating in a lineup where playful meets profound.

The collection embarked on its visual narrative with a stark, paper-white shift dress, distinguished by a rectangular cutout at the bust showcasing a pair of ovular eyes, their irises crafted from silver studs. This motif of engaging eyes cascaded through the collection, from skirts to dresses adorned with an abundance of googly eyes that seemed to hover ethereally around the wearer. This motif gradually transitioned into dalmatian spots across a variety of pieces, including a veiled cape dress and an oversized shirt dress, culminating in a classic denim ensemble that redefined casual chic with a hint of whimsy.

As the collection evolved, it introduced denim pieces that played with form and exposure, from cigarette jeans to daring denim hot pants, all while maintaining a playful edge through the addition of oversized crystal embellishments. These crystals not only added a sonic element with their gentle jingle but also transformed into a visually stunning tessellated attire, encompassing skirts, crop tops, and even a full-face mask, marrying the audacity of modern design with the nostalgia of pop art.

The narrative then blossomed into floral designs, where spots transformed into intricate flowers adorning everything from long sleeve tops to expansive crossbody bags. These florals ranged from subtle to striking, with some glass-like appliques creating a three-dimensional effect that seemed to sprout organically from the fabric.

Concluding on a note of refined simplicity, the collection distilled its earlier vibrancy into minimalist designs featuring circles within circles, realized through delicate crystal eyelets and leather, all punctuated with silver studs to mimic the iris. This final evolution embraced a palette of carnation pinks, blacks, and whites, encapsulating the collection’s journey through a lens of shared beauty and artistic expression.

Celebrating ten years of boundary-pushing design, Area’s SS24 collection stands as a testament to the enduring power of fashion as a medium for visual storytelling, inviting onlookers into a shared experience of beauty that transcends the ordinary.
