Apple to enhance AirPods Max with lossless audio in upcoming update

Apple is set to revolutionize the listening experience for its AirPods Max users with an upcoming software update that will introduce lossless audio and ultra-low latency features. This update, expected next month, will transform these flagship headphones into a tool not just for listening, but also for creating music, according to the Cupertino-based tech giant.

In a move beyond aesthetic updates and USB-C integration—partly influenced by the European Union’s new charging standard—Apple has been developing a significant enhancement to its over-ear headphones. The forthcoming update will support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio playback, promising a studio-quality listening experience. With this upgrade, AirPods Max will be capable of delivering uncompressed sound quality, allowing users to “experience music the way the artist created it in the studio,” as stated by Apple.

Moreover, the upgrade will enrich Apple Music subscribers’ experience, providing access to over 100 million songs in lossless audio format. Apple’s initiative seems to bridge the gap with competitors by focusing not only on the listening quality but also on music production capabilities.

The update is particularly aimed at music producers working with spatial audio. Apple claims that the AirPods Max will be the first headphones to enable creators to both produce and mix music in Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking features. The integration with Apple’s Logic Pro and other undisclosed music creation apps will further empower musicians and producers.

Additionally, the new ultra-low latency audio makes AirPods Max an appealing option for gamers, promising zero response delay and performance comparable to native speakers on Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

However, it’s important to note that these enhancements will be available exclusively on the USB-C model of AirPods Max. Owners of the original version with a lightning port will not benefit from the update due to the slower data transfer capability of the older connection type.

Apple has yet to announce a specific release date but has confirmed that the update is slated for release “next month”. Users and enthusiasts are advised to stay tuned for further announcements.
