adidas’ move for the planet initiative returns – inspiring millions to support sports facilities facing the effects of extreme climate conditions

  • adidas will donate 1 euro for every 10 minutes of recorded activity between May 12 and 25 via the adidas Running app or Strava – up to a total of 1.5 million euros – to sustainability projects in sport around the world.
  • The company maintains a long-term partnership with Common Goal and United Nations Climate Change, supporting local community projects that modernize and implement infrastructure and offer educational programs on sustainability.
  • As part of the communication campaign for Move For The Planet, a series of films featuring athletes Valentina Höll, Ferdinand Omanyala, Massy Arias, and Alexis Mac Alister highlight the importance of sports facilities in their local communities.

adidas announces a new edition of Move For The Planet – the annual initiative focused on increasing the resilience of sports facilities to extreme climate conditions worldwide. Everyday athletes are encouraged to get moving and track their activity to convert it into funds that will support sustainability education and the improvement of spaces where sport is practiced.
For every 10 minutes of relevant activity recorded between May 12 and 25 in the adidas Running app – or, for the first time, on Strava – adidas will donate 1 euro, up to a total of 1.5 million euros, to various global sustainability projects in sport.
Participants can choose from over 100 trackable sports, including running, swimming, and cycling – contributing to the 400,000,000 minutes of movement already recorded since the initiative’s launch in 2023.

In partnership with Common Goal and UN Climate Change, adidas will donate the funds to implement and upgrade infrastructure in communities affected by extreme weather. These include weather-resistant facilities such as water collection and purification systems introduced through United Through Sport in South Africa and waste management systems implemented by Enabling Leadership in India.

The funds raised also provide access to an educational platform for NGOs and global organizations that promote learning about more sustainable practices – using the power of sport to ensure its future in communities. This year’s initiative will have a direct impact on projects such as Girls United in Mexico, El Rio in Colombia, Red Deporte in Spain, and United Through Sport in South Africa.

Since its launch, Move For The Planet has introduced sustainability education programs to over 8,000 people and improved access to sports facilities for more than 23,000 individuals involved in the participating projects.

Ashley Czarnowski, Senior Director, Global Purpose Marketing at adidas, said:

“We are excited to bring back Move For The Planet for the third consecutive year. This is an extremely important initiative that helps support sports communities facing the effects of extreme climate events. As the number of included sports and projects grows, we look forward to seeing the movement and its impact continue to grow. This year, we’re calling on the adidas community to be a catalyst for action, encouraging those around them to join and move.”

To inspire even more movement, a new lineup of adidas athletes joins Move For The Planet for the first time. These include FIFA World Cup winner Alexis Mac Alister, Downhill Mountain Bike World Champion Valentina Höll, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Ferdinand Omanyala, and renowned health and fitness coach Massy Arias. In a series of short films, each athlete shares their communities and the importance of sports facilities for the next generation.

Rute Caldeira, Head of Impact at Common Goal, said:

Move For The Planet exemplifies the power of collaboration in creating more resilient sports facilities. This valuable partnership combines innovation with impact, supporting local sports organizations. Over the past two years, Move For The Planet has brought lasting improvements to underserved regions around the world. We are excited to continue this vital work in the third year, building a better future for the communities that need it most.”

Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu, Sports for Climate Action Lead at UN Climate Change, said:

“This partnership aims to strengthen knowledge and action in sustainability within the sports community, bringing together expertise and case studies for best practices. By sharing perspectives, identifying needs, and collaborating to find solutions, we can drive positive change, strengthen communities, and create lasting impact through sport.”

At the local level, adidas Runners Bucharest supports the cause through a series of sustainability-focused events, as well as weekly sessions held every Thursday in Herăstrău Park, including: Beginner Program (3km), 5km run, and 7km run, along with yoga and functional training sessions.
