The journey of Daniel Radu

Having been involved in the arts since the fifth grade, I grew up in an environment influenced by art and beauty. Although I entered with the clear idea that architecture would be my future, things changed a year later when I discovered Fashion TV and saw one of Thierry Mugler’s major collections. I like to believe that since then, every fashion sketch I’ve made has contributed to all that I am today.

My three years of college were an experimental period during which I tried to utilize as many stylistic areas, materials, and concepts as possible to understand the aesthetic that fits my vision. I did not want my thesis to be my first collection, which is why I worked on three other collections throughout these years. Completely different in style, number of outfits, and technique, they laid the foundation for my evolution, as they helped me understand what suits me. From a manifesto for eroticism with embroidery inspired by Japanese prints, to a refined collection with a lot of gold, white, and feathers, we come to the last one that starts from Berlin rave clubs.

All the above, along with my university projects, have shaped my vision of fashion and also served as collaboration opportunities with Romanian and international artists like Alina Eremia, Andia, Theo Rose, Princess Chelsea, and magazines such as FPM Magazine, LACE, and L’Officiel Baltic.

I am currently a graduate and a master’s student in the fashion department of the National University of Arts in Bucharest and work as a designer for my own brand, stylist, and teacher. Entering university, I did not know where to start with a sewing machine or what a bobbin was. Now, 90% of the pieces are made entirely by myself. My bachelor’s studies culminated in the thesis project ‘alchemy,’ where I created a collection of 12 outfits for men, women, and unisex. The idea of the speed age is increasingly felt and affects everyone, and the lifestyle must be constantly adapted to ongoing changes. Therefore, the collection comes to the aid of the modern individual who leads an active life, cares about their image, does not value the gender labels of clothes, and is in constant transformation. Each piece is a process of surpassing practical skills, merging two totally different stylistic directions, and breaking gender barriers in clothing.

‘alchemy’ consists of products made from lycra that have pattern modifications that elevate them beyond the mundane and sporty, achieving a dynamism built on the idea of perfect symmetry. They are easily paired with pieces meant to be elegant to compose an outfit for an official event. On the other hand, items like jackets, coats, or skirts have been modified and constructed to be integrated into daily outfits between gym training and work. The collection was showcased at the Gala Unarte, where it received the university award, Feeric Fashion Festival, in Lace Magazine editorial, KALTBLUT Magazine, Arad Fashion Days, Transilvania Fashion Festival, Becreative, and also at DIPLOMA.”
