Moles: A Dangerous Misconception

There is a widely held belief that moles are harmless by definition small beauty marks, genetically inherited, deserving no more attention than a quick glance in the mirror. This misconception can be, literally, dangerous.

Melanoma, one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer, often begins precisely where we least think to look carefully: in the form of a mole that changes. And the changes are, most of the time, subtle. A border that becomes irregular. A color that takes on new shades. A surface that shifts slightly. Things we ignore for years because “it has always been there.”

The ABCDE rule is the first tool every person should know: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color non-uniformity, Diameter greater than 6mm, Evolution visible over time. If any of these criteria apply to a mole on your body, a dermatological consultation is not optional it is urgent.

An annual check-up with a dermatologist is not a luxury. It is one of the simplest and most effective health decisions you can make. Melanoma detected at an early stage has a survival rate of over 98%. Detected late, the prognosis changes dramatically.

The “beautiful” mole can stay beautiful for a lifetime. But it deserves to be checked.
