Mercedes-Benz Vitoria Plant ready for a new era: pre-series production of the new VLE has successfully started

  • The Mercedes-Benz plant in Vitoria (Spain) is preparing for the start of series production of the new VLE.
  • Pre-series production of the VLE model has already successfully begun, ensuring Mercedes-Benz quality standards.
  • More than 90% of modernization works at the Vitoria plant have already been completed.
  • The new VLE will celebrate its world premiere in the first half of 2026.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Vitoria has successfully started production of the first pre-series units of the new fully electric VLE, thus preparing for the launch of series production in 2026. Detailed tests in this initial production stage guarantee the maintenance of the quality standard expected by the brand’s customers. To integrate the first model based on the new modular and scalable architecture dedicated to vans, the Vitoria plant has undergone an extensive modernization process.

“ The new VLE is the first vehicle built on our modular and extremely flexible architecture dedicated to vans. In record time, we moved from the first conceptual ideas to production. Throughout development, we used innovative digital methods, achieving significant results. Our interdisciplinary and international teams have set new standards. The result will be presented in the first half of 2026.”

— Thomas Klein, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans

The approximately 5,000 employees of the plant participated in more than 160 training programs on new processes and technologies, including collaborations with other Mercedes-Benz locations. Topics covered included: integration of new IT standards, use of modern materials, and implementation of advanced technologies.

High-tech production at the Vitoria plant

Starting in 2026, the Vitoria plant will produce the new fully electric VLE, as well as the current V-Class, Vito, and eVito models, with maximum flexibility. The VLE will be integrated into the current production flow, initially as an electric vehicle, and later also available with a state-of-the-art combustion engine. Thus, Mercedes-Benz models with different propulsion types will be built on the same assembly line. For this step, all production processes have been checked and adapted – digital, efficient, flexible, and sustainable.

Substantial investments have enabled the construction of a new body shop and a fully flexible paint shop, while the assembly hall has been significantly modernized without interrupting operations.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Vitoria is also setting new standards in sustainable van production. As in all locations of the Mercedes-Benz Vans network, production is carbon neutral; electricity purchased has come entirely from renewable sources since 2013. In addition, a photovoltaic power plant has been installed in Vitoria, and the buildings are heated with geothermal energy and by recovering residual heat from the painting process.

Preparation for the new VLE included the use of cutting-edge technologies: artificial intelligence, digital tools, and the “digital twin” production concept. For the first time, the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) will be introduced on a series production van model.

“ The new VLE marks the beginning of a new era, including for our plants. Vitoria is the first location in the global Mercedes-Benz Vans network to produce this model. More than 90% of modernization work is already completed, the first production tests have started, and the team is extremely motivated to start production next year. I am very proud that we managed to prepare the plant in such a short time – a clear proof of our flexibility. We are ready to build the future of Mercedes-Benz Vans.”

Mercedes-Benz VLE redefines the concept of space

Fully electric, the VLE brings together the best of both worlds: the driving dynamics of a limousine and the versatility of an MPV. Primarily oriented towards customer needs, the VLE impresses with design, functionality, and adaptability.

Available with up to eight seats, the VLE portfolio ranges from versatile vehicles for families and customers with an active lifestyle to the option of exclusive transfer, offering adaptable space for any situation.

From concept to production in record time

The VLE is the first model based on the modular and scalable architecture for vans developed by Mercedes-Benz. It has successfully passed all major stages of the testing program, demonstrating efficiency and maneuverability similar to that of a limousine.

In the wind tunnel, it set new records (Mercedes-Benz VLE succeeds in next major development steps). In long-distance road tests – from Stuttgart, through the Alps, to Rome – it required only two 15-minute charging stops (Mercedes-Benz VLE succeeds in next major development steps).

On the oval track in Nardò, southern Italy, it impressed with agility and high-speed performance (Mercedes-Benz VLE succeeds in next major development steps). In extreme conditions, at the Arctic Circle, it confirmed that a modern electric vehicle is perfectly usable daily, even on ice and snow (New Mercedes-Benz MPVs master winter testing in the Arctic Circle).

The world premiere of the new VLE will take place in the first half of 2026.
