Mobius Gallery announces the opening of the exhibition Absolute Beginners by Spanish artist Gino Rubert, his second exhibition organized by the gallery. Three years after Time to Set the Cage on Fire, the project that introduced him to the Romanian public, Gino Rubert returns to Bucharest with a new body of work made in mixed media.

The opening will take place on Friday, September 18, 2026, between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, at Mobius Gallery, Piața Amzei 13. The exhibition can be visited until October 10, 2026.

Absolute Beginners brings together recent paintings that draw the viewer into a playful, erudite, yet also strange universe, in which the entire history of painting is summoned onto the same stage and invited, with disarming naturalness, to begin again.

Gino Rubert works in a dense, seductive technique that combines photographic collage with oil and acrylic painting, textiles, pins and found materials. His canvases function less as simple images and more as carefully constructed scenes: lit, arranged and choreographed like small theaters charged with tension, emotion and storytelling. Art history, desire, memory and mortality reappear here as recurring themes, brought together in a kind of magical realism of festive, affectionate intensity, in which love and death are celebrated in the same gesture.

The exhibition’s title comes from a series of paintings that imagine improbable encounters between the artists who shaped Gino Rubert’s own understanding of painting. Picasso, Duchamp, Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Dalí, Miró, Tàpies and others appear together with complete naturalness, as if they had always inhabited the same era and the same room.

The exhibition also develops one of the distinctive dimensions of the artist’s practice: the closeness he creates between the viewer and the fictional worlds built on the canvas. His characters look back at us with attention and complicity, drawing each visitor inside the image, both as spectator and participant. Every gesture, glance or appearance seems carefully placed, like a scene directed with precision.

About the artist

Gino Rubert is a Spanish artist whose practice unfolds at the intersection of painting, drawing, collage and literature. His works build theatrical, sensual and often ironic visual narratives, in which personal memory, art history, literature, desire and mortality meet.

Through elaborate figurative compositions and a distinctive mixed-media technique, Rubert develops scenes that are simultaneously intimate and surreal, familiar and unsettling. His practice stands out through visual density, narrative intensity, and a constant, playful and affectionate dialogue with the history of painting.
