From court to closet: How basketball sneakers are making a fashion comeback

After years of stagnation, basketball sneakers are finally seeing a style revival — and this time, they’re aiming to score both on and off the court.

A Fresh Look for a Classic Game

Nike, Adidas, Converse and even emerging names like Anta and Rigorer are reimagining performance basketball shoes with bold silhouettes and fashion-forward design. The Air Jordan 40Adidas AE 1, and Shai 001 have already turned heads — not just for how they perform, but for how they look.

Designs like zippered closures, honeycomb shells and sleek low-top profiles show the shift from purely functional to fashionably versatile. “We know our product has to work in multiple environments — from court to classroom,” said Jason Mayden, Chief Design Officer at Jordan Brand.

Rising Stars, Rising Influence

Young NBA stars like Anthony Edwards and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, as well as WNBA icons like A’ja Wilson and Caitlin Clark, are leading this transformation. Their signature shoes are not only high performers but also cultural statements — often selling out within minutes.

Meanwhile, Chinese brands like Anta, driven by the popularity of players like Kyrie Irving, are pushing into the U.S. market with strong designs and rapid growth on resale platforms like StockX.

The Challenge: Fashion vs. Function

Despite the buzz, basketball shoe sales in the U.S. have dipped — down 5% in 2024 and 8% YTD in 2025, according to Circana. Analysts point to the rise of running shoes in both performance and lifestyle use as a factor. Yet, as more athletes and designers balance technical innovation with visual appeal, the potential for a true basketball sneaker renaissance grows.

“Innovation matters,” said Beth Goldstein, footwear analyst at Circana. “It’s not just about retro anymore. It’s about building new franchises that speak to today’s generation.”

Final Buzzer?

Whether this style revival can fully bring basketball sneakers back into mainstream fashion remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the game has changed — and so have the shoes.
