Adidas is launching the second edition of its global initiative “Move For The Planet,” encouraging people worldwide to convert their physical activities into positive actions for the environment. From May 10-22, for every 10 minutes of activity recorded in the adidas Running app, the company will donate 1 euro, aiming to reach a total of 1.5 million euros.
Participants can log their movement from over 100 sports, including handball, Zumba, fitness, padel, and many more. The initiative is supported through partnerships with Common Goal and UN Climate Change Sports for Climate Action, which fund projects that provide sustainability education and make sports facilities more resilient against harsh weather conditions.
In 2023, over half a million people participated in the inaugural Move For The Planet event, with running (63.1%), walking (17.9%), and cycling (9.2%) being the most recorded activities. This year, adidas has expanded the initiative to include a broader array of sports, making participation even more accessible.
Ashley Czarnowski, Senior Director of Global Purpose Marketing at adidas, stated, “We are thrilled to build on the success of last year’s Move for The Planet, which brought together a community of over a million people globally. This year, people can log their activity minutes from over 100 sports, and we are expanding the program’s impact to include a new series of projects and initiatives.”
Common Goal, a global impact movement leveraging sport for a more sustainable and equitable future, is delighted to see the return of Move For The Planet. “Last year’s success increased accessibility to sports for people who previously lacked this privilege. For example, at the Cancha Violeta sports space in San Pedro Xalostoc, Mexico, we funded the installation of drainage systems that collect water for nearby gardens and fields,” said Olivia Baston-Pitt, Senior Impact Sponsorship Manager at Common Goal.
Alongside Common Goal, adidas supports UN Climate Change – Sports for Climate Action – to develop a series of training modules for sports NGOs focused on developmental goals. This partnership aims to use sport as a tool for education and community engagement in climate issues and sustainable practices. The funds raised through the Move For The Planet campaign will finance the creation of accessible training materials and hosting sessions with non-profit networks to support communities through sport.
Romania plays an active role in this event, supported by the adidas Runners Bucharest community. This community, one of Romania’s largest amateur running groups, welcomes all runners regardless of level. The main campaign event in Romania will take place in Bucharest on May 16 at Roaba de Cultura. Participants need to become members of adidas Runners Bucharest and register for the Move for The Planet challenge in the adidas Running app.
Every movement counts when contributing to the common good, so adidas encourages people in Romania to participate in the Move For The Planet initiative throughout its duration. Whether you choose to walk or cycle instead of driving, or engage in activities like running, training, playing tennis, attending Zumba classes, or swimming, each minute logged in the adidas Running app contributes to a more sustainable future for sports.
